Tribute to Professor Dr. Joseph Saye Guannu

A DIPLOMAT, STATESMAN, PATRIOT AND ABOVE ALL A GREAT TEACHER IS GONE.

The second stanza of his poem A Psalm of Life Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s said “For the soul is dead that slumbers, and things are not what they seem”. Truly things are not what they seem for Dr. Guannu’s soul shall not slumber because he labored to leave a legacy that lives on.

Among many things Dr. Guannu served his country Liberia as Ambassador to the United Stated of America, Minister of State for Presidential Affairs and played advisories roles at various points. Despite the many prominent roles he played, Dr. Guannu will forever remained remembered as a Historian and popular for writing:

  • Liberian History Up to 1847
  • A Short History of the First Liberian Republic
  • An Introduction to Liberian Government: The First Republic and the People’s Redemption Council
  • Liberian History Before 1857: A Reference for Elementary Pupils
  • The Perennial Problem of Liberian History
  • Nation-states and the Challenges of Regional Integration in West Africa: The Case of Liberia
  • Liberian Civics
  • Inaugural Speeches from Joseph Jenkins Roberts to William V.S. Tubman

Liberia has indeed lost a lover; a soul that chose national development over personal wealth. Dr. Guannu dedicated his life to service to humanity. Deciding to remain a classroom teacher in a country like Liberia is sacrificing a better living condition for your entire family. Such is what Dr. Guannu did for the good of his country that abandoned him final years on earth.

Sleep on Joe, I will forever remain grateful for the role in played in shaping my future. We will miss you dearly but loves you best. May His divine providence guide those you are leaving behind until we all meet on that great atonement day.
